Our Experience In Hiroshima

The first time we visited Japan back in the fall of 2018 we had to miss Hiroshima because it is quite a long way west of the other popular tourist spots and we didn’t have the time or budget to make it work.

However, during our second and most recent trip to Japan for the cherry blossom season in 2023, we made sure to make time for Hiroshima in our itinerary.

We spent 3 nights and 2 full days exploring the downtown area, Miyajima Island, Hiroshima Castle and of course the harrowing Peace Memorial Park.

Our three priorities when researching where to book our hotel in Hiroshima were as follows:

  • 1. Centrally located between the top attractions, downtown and Hiroshima JR Station
  • 2. Within easy walking distance of a tram stop with direct access to the station
  • 3. Close to a diverse range of places to eat out for all meals of the day

After finding affordable rates at the centrally located and popular Candeo Hotels Hatchobori, we booked our 3 night stay and had a fantastic experience.

However, there are many more excellent Hiroshima hotel options for you to consider and we will cover them all in this guide.

What Is The Best Place To Stay In Hiroshima?

You can choose to stay in several different places during your visit to Hiroshima, so we will walk you through a brief description of the most popular areas.

Here are the touristy areas to stay in Hiroshima:

  • 1. Hiroshima JR Station
  • 2. Downtown Hiroshima (Hatchobori, Hondori and Nagarekawacho)
  • 3. Peace Memorial Park
  • 4. Miyajima Island (also known as Itsukushima)

Hiroshima JR Station

Hiroshima JR Station is a great place to stay in Hiroshima because you are most likely going to arrive into the city by train and hotels here are extremely convenient. You won’t have to walk, get a taxi or hop on a tram with your baggage.

You can take a tram to Peace Memorial Park, then explore Hiroshima Castle and the downtown area for one day. The next day you can take a train directly out of the station close to your hotel for the ferry to Miyajima Island.

The downside to staying near the station is limited dining options when compared to the downtown Hiroshima area.

Downtown Hiroshima

Downtown Hiroshima is the best place to stay in Hiroshima for attractions, foodies and nightlife. You will be in easy walking distance to Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle and all of the shopping or restaurants you like.

You would have to make your way back to Hiroshima Station to catch the train to Miyajimaguchi Station for the ferry to the island. We did it this way and it is a really easy process.

The downside to staying downtown is having to cart your luggage around on trams or taxis to reach your hotel and get back to the station.

Our top foodie recommendation is Momonoki Steakhouse which is a tiny intimate place with incredible tasting food. You have to book in advance and it is expensive but definitely worth it.

Peace Memorial Park

Peace Memorial Park is the best place to stay in Hiroshima if you want to be close to the museums and atomic bomb dome. Hotels here would work better in you plan to spend more than one day in the park.

It is much quieter around the park and you will have a harder time with eating out. With that said, we highly recommend a fantastic bagel place south of the park called Wildman Bagel which is amazing.

Similarly to staying in downtown, the downside to booking a hotel near Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is having to cart around your luggage both ways.

Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island is the most picturesque and unique place to stay in Hiroshima. However, we would only suggest planning to stay on the island if you will be there for at least 2 nights, if not more.

You will have to take another train once arriving into the JR station, followed by a ferry and then you have to figure out how to get to your accommodation on the island.

You could easily spend 2 or 3 days exploring Miyajima Island but it is more commonly visited as a day trip from the other 3 areas in Hiroshima mentioned above.

What Are The Best Hotels In Hiroshima?

The term best can be interpreted in several ways and it has a different meaning for everyone.

Does best simply mean the highest rated? The highest quality? What about price and location?

In this guide we strive for inclusivity when we show you our version of the best hotels. Our list is based on the highest guest ratings and our own experiences but crucially we include every budget category so that every type of traveler can find the best hotel available.

Are you curious about the best hotels in Hiroshima based purely on ratings?

Here are the top 3 hotels in Hiroshima according to thousands of reviews from several popular online sources (with at least 100 authentic guest reviews – correct as of July 2023 but subject to frequent changes):

Booking

Hotels (Expedia)

Google

Tripadvisor

Ratings are good to use as a guide but they are subjective and will fluctuate over time. Look for hotels with high scores and a high number of ratings. That is the sign of a quality hotel.

One thing to note is that hotels with the best ratings often translate to hotels with the highest nightly cost. And that is why we do not simply list hotels with the highest ratings in our guides.

Are Hotels In Hiroshima Expensive?

No, hotels in Hiroshima typically have excellent prices and that is usually reflected in higher than usual value for money scores on popular hotel search engines like Booking.com.

We found Hiroshima to have better value hotels than almost every other place we visited in Japan across two separate visits, which includes multiple destinations both on and off the beaten path.

If you are staying in Tokyo and Kyoto before or after Hiroshima you will notice a difference in average prices at both cheap and luxury hotels.

Hotel Tax In Hiroshima, Japan

Bear in mind when booking your hotel in Hiroshima that you will pay 10% hotel tax on top of your base rate.

So let’s say the basic nightly room cost at a cheap Hiroshima hotel is $100.00 for one night, your actual total cost is going to be $110.00.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for includes taxes and fees. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like +$30 for taxes and fees, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 10% tax.

Certain Hiroshima hotels may also add on a property service tax which will also show in the included taxes section.

These are just things to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay.
