8 Top Rated Hotels In Hiroshima Japan

8 best hotels in Hiroshima Japan by Best Hotels Anywhere

Hiroshima, Japan has many highly rated western-style hotels and traditional Japanese accommodations. From experience, we think you should consider booking your hotel in one of the 4 most popular tourist areas: Hiroshima JR Station, Downtown Hiroshima, Peace Memorial Park or Miyajima Island. We stayed in Downtown but we’d consider staying on Miyajima Island next time.

In this guide we show you the best hotels in Hiroshima Japan for all budgets, based on our experiences.

Our Experience In Hiroshima

Here we are at the Grand Torii Gate on Miyajima Island in the rain

The first time we visited Japan in the fall of 2018 we had to miss Hiroshima because it was a long and expensive train journey west from Kyoto and Osaka, and we didn’t have the time or budget to make it work. But we finally made it to Hiroshima during our most recent trip to Japan for the cherry blossoms in 2023. Read more about us.

We spent 3 nights and 2 full days exploring Downtown Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Hiroshima Castle and of course the harrowing Peace Memorial Park. Our hotel priorities were a central location, being close to a tram stop with direct access to the JR station and being close to lots of restaurants. We found good rates at Candeo Hotels Hatchobori and it was a fantastic stay.

Where To Stay In Hiroshima

Hiroshima has four main tourist areas for hotels, restaurants and attractions:

  • Hiroshima JR Station
  • Downtown Hiroshima (Hatchobori, Hondori and Nagarekawacho)
  • Peace Memorial Park
  • Miyajima Island (Itsukushima)

Let’s take a closer look at each area to explain:

1. Hiroshima JR Station

Hiroshima JR Station is a great place to stay in Hiroshima because you’ll likely arrive into the city by train, so hotels in the immediate area are extremely convenient. You won’t have to walk, get a taxi or hop on a tram with your baggage.

From the JR station you can take a tram to Peace Memorial Park, then explore Hiroshima Castle and the downtown area for one day. The next day you can take a train directly out of the station for the ferry to Miyajima Island. The downside to staying near the station is limited dining options when compared to Downtown Hiroshima.

2. Downtown Hiroshima

Downtown Hiroshima is the best place to stay in Hiroshima for attractions, food and nightlife. You’ll be in easy walking distance to Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, shopping and restaurants. You would have to make your way back to Hiroshima Station to catch the train to Miyajimaguchi Station for the ferry to the island. But we did it exactly this way and it’s a really easy process.

The downside to staying downtown is having to cart your luggage around on trams or taxis to reach your hotel and get back to the station. Our top restaurant recommendation is Momonoki Steakhouse, an intimate place with incredible food. It’s expensive and you have to book in advance but it’s worth it.

3. Peace Memorial Park

Peace Memorial Park is the best place to stay in Hiroshima if you want to be close to the museums and atomic bomb dome. Hotels here work better if you plan to spend more than one day at the museums. It’s a much quieter area so you’ll have a harder time eating out.

With that said, we highly recommend a fantastic bagel place south of the park called Wildman Bagel, which we thought was superb. Similarly to staying in Downtown Hiroshima, the downside to booking a hotel near Peace Memorial Park is having to cart around your luggage both ways.

4. Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island is the most picturesque and unique place to stay in Hiroshima. We recommend staying on the island for at least 2 nights because you’ll have to take another train after arriving into the JR station from Kyoto or Tokyo, followed by a ferry and then you have to figure out how to get to your accommodation on the island.

You can easily day trip to Miyajima Island from the other three areas of Hiroshima, but we encourage you to consider staying on the island instead. Hotels on Miyajima Island are very highly rated and they’re typically Japanese style lodgings set in peaceful locations. We’ll cover Miyajima Island hotels at the end of the guide separately because there’s lots of great options for you.

Affordability

We found Hiroshima’s hotels to have better value than almost every other place we’ve visited in Japan across two separate visits. And that includes destinations both on and off the beaten path.

If you’re planning to visit Tokyo or Hakone on the same trip, you’ll notice how much cheaper it is to stay in Hiroshima. Kyoto and Osaka also offer good value for money, but for us Hiroshima was the biggest surprise.

Added Tax

Bear in mind when booking your hotel in Hiroshima that you’ll pay 10% hotel tax on top of your base rate.

So, let’s say the basic nightly room cost at a cheap hotel is $100.00 USD for one night, your actual total cost is going to be $110.00 USD.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for includes taxes and fees. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like +$30 for taxes and fees, that means you’ll pay the hotel room cost + the additional 10% tax.

Certain hotels may also add on a property service tax which will also show in the included taxes section. These are just things to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay.

Our Verdict

Hiroshima has a good selection of affordable hotels in each of its major tourist areas. You should figure out exactly where you want to stay first and then choose a hotel to suit your budget. We think it’s great that some of the highest rated hotels in town are actually in the cheaper price category.

With experience, we’d either stay at a hotel in Downtown Hiroshima again or we’d stay on Miyajima Island at one of the top rated traditional Japanese ryokans.
