Should You Stay On Or Off The Las Vegas Strip?

First things first, should you stay on or off the Las Vegas strip?

Well, both are viable options and each will suit certain types of traveler.

However, we think if you’re going to Vegas, you might as well get right in among the action and that is the major focus of this guide.

We are going to deep dive the top hotels on the Las Vegas strip.

First Time In Las Vegas

Is this going to be your first time visiting Las Vegas?

If it is your maiden voyage to the glitz and glamour of Vegas, you really should stay somewhere on the strip for the experience.

Staying off the Las Vegas strip has its benefits and there are plenty of highly rated hotels in other parts of the city such as Fremont Street. We will cover Fremont Street at the end of this guide.

However, unless you are in town for a conference or to watch the speedway for instance, you should start your search right on the strip.

With that said, the first step to finding the perfect hotel on the Las Vegas strip is to make sure you are staying in the right area of the long stretch of Las Vegas Blvd for your travel goals.

Your Las Vegas Travel Goals

Here are a few questions you should be asking yourself before booking one of the best hotels on the Las Vegas strip:

  • Do you have any preferred shows, concerts, nightclubs or shopping experiences planned in your Las Vegas itinerary?
  • Are you visiting Vegas to chill, relax by the pool, eat great food and unwind?
  • Conversely, are you booking a weekend break to Vegas for action, drinking and partying?

How you plan to spend your time in Las Vegas will impact on your hotel choice.

For example, there’s not much point booking one of the top hotels in Vegas and spending a fortune to be out partying all the time and only using your room as a place to sleep for a few hours before getting back to the fun.

On the other hand, couples and families who want to have the complete Las Vegas experience should consider booking into one of the top rated and more luxurious hotels on the strip.

Let’s break down the strip.

Do you know exactly what you will do when you are in Las Vegas?

If you’re not 100% sure yet, read our popular roundup of the 40 best things to do in Las Vegas on our travel site Where Are Those Morgans.

Breaking Down The Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas strip can be defined in many ways. We are using Four Seasons as our south strip marker and Wynn as our north strip marker.

Our calculations show the length of the Las Vegas strip between those two hotels is a total walking distance of 2.7 miles and will take you around 1 hour to walk.

That is without dodging through crowds, waiting at traffic lights and being distracted by the craziness.

Therefore, a good way to look at Las Vegas hotels on the strip is to break the strip down into three sections:

  • South Las Vegas strip
  • Central Las Vegas strip
  • North Las Vegas strip

Straight forward enough, right!

Best Part Of The Las Vegas Strip

The entire Las Vegas strip has things going on non-stop, so you won’t be missing out too much by being in any one out of the three areas. However, most of the buzz on the Las Vegas strip is in the center and slightly to the north of center.

Think Planet Hollywood, Cosmopolitan, up through Paris Las Vegas, Bellagio, Caesars Palace and as far as Venetian. That main area is where everyone is drawn like a gravitational force by day and night.

Therefore we would recommend focusing your hotel search on the center of the Las Vegas strip if you are visiting to be in the center of everything. Groups of friends will likely prefer being central.

Pros To Staying In The Center Of The Las Vegas Strip

If you book a hotel in the central Las Vegas strip, you can get to most things quickly enough, even if they are at either end of the strip. You only ever have half of the strip at the most to walk out and back, rather than the whole thing.

Whereas staying at either end of the Las Vegas strip means you always have to walk towards the center in order to get to the bulk of the main attractions, bars or restaurants.

At times you will have to walk the entire length and back again.

Pros To Staying In The Far North Or South Of The Las Vegas Strip

The central strip works best for those who want to be in the thick of it, but not everyone does. It is much quieter on either end of the strip and booking a hotel in the north or south allows you to escape the madness.

Families and couples looking for a more relaxing or romantic experience might want to consider either end of the strip.

Top Las Vegas Tip: Instead of walking you can always use the Las Vegas Monorail to get to the center or opposite side of the strip.

Is The North Or South Side Better?

Having stayed in hotels up and down the Las Vegas strip, we would choose the north side of the strip over the south side.

The south side is great and has a grouping of the cheapest hotels on the Las Vegas strip, but the north side has more of the top attractions.

Every evening you will end up somewhere around Bellagio or Venetian and it’s much further back to the south side from that area.

Let’s take a look at the hotels in each area of the strip.

Las Vegas Strip Hotels Ranked

Are you interested in seeing the full list of 25 hotels on the Las Vegas strip ranked in order of previous guest rating?

We have taken the review scores from thousands of guests and compiled them into a basic table to show you the top rated Las Vegas hotels as per people who have stayed before you.

Our Las Vegas hotel ratings have been collected from two sources:

  1. Booking – Booking.com is one of the world’s largest hotel booking platforms. It is used by millions and it is our own preferred hotel booking engine.
  2. Google – Google ratings are becoming the new way to rate experiences. We always check Google ratings on hotels, restaurants and bars because the community is incredibly diverse.

The whole point of our guide is to help you find the best hotel based on data and this is a great place to start looking at the numbers.

The following Las Vegas hotels on the strip are listed in order from southern most to northern most location on the strip. In the right column you will find each Las Vegas hotel ranked from best to worst by the combined review scores from Booking.com and Google:

Key Takeaways

Let’s take a quick glance at interpreting the data.

The most important thing to remember is that hotels on the Las Vegas strip are always evolving, remodeling and being rebranded.

For instance, The Mirage has been bought by Hard Rock and will be rebranded within the next few years. Plus, Bally’s has recently been reopened as Horseshoe.

Below, we will take a closer look at the top rated Las Vegas hotel, why Cosmopolitan is a little different, overall review scores and the clear impacts of being among the oldest hotels on the strip has on guest reviews.

Top Rated Hotel On The Las Vegas Strip

According to thousands of previous visitors to Vegas, Wynn is the top rated hotel on the Las Vegas strip. Wynn is located at the very top (north) of the strip, next to its twin hotel called Encore.

Wynn and Four Seasons have the same combined ratings as per Booking and Google reviews, but Four Seasons has far fewer overall reviews.

Interestingly, Four Seasons is at the very bottom (south) of the strip, which means the two top rated hotels are at the top and bottom of the Las Vegas Strip.

Additional Sources

What if you don’t use Booking or Google when looking for your hotel?

Well, here is a summarized compilation of the best hotels on the Las Vegas Strip according to ratings from users across two more popular online sources (correct as of April 2023):

  • Tripadvisor – Four Seasons and Wynn are numbers 1 and 2 respectively for overall ratings. However, Bellagio and Venetian are numbers 1 and 2 when it comes to best value for money hotels on the Las Vegas Strip.
  • Hotels.com – Wynn, Cosmopolitan and The Palazzo are all rated at 9.0 / 10 by previous guests to Las Vegas. However, the number 1 slot once again goes to Four Seasons, which is rated at 9.4 / 10.

Update for April 2023: US News and Travel Report has recently labelled Four Seasons as the number 1 hotel on the Las Vegas Strip.

So it looks as though Wynn and Four Seasons will battle it out over the coming years to take the crown of best hotel in Vegas.

How do you choose between the two top ranked Las Vegas Strip hotels?

Well, you should stay at Wynn if you want a plush casino hotel with all the trimmings, or stay at Four Seasons if you want the same class and style but without the on site casino.

Cosmopolitan

We have to mention that Cosmopolitan is not available to book on Booking.com at the time of writing. The guest review score is blank, so we filled it with **.

However, we calculated it at 8.7 to match The Venetian.

The quality and overall experience is similar in our opinion, plus Hotels.com has both Cosmopolitan and Venetian previous guest scores at 9.0 / 10.

Review Scores

It is important to remember that review scores are just one of the three most important hotel booking metrics. Location and price are the other two metrics to consider.

Wynn and Four Seasons are right on the ends of the Las Vegas strip and they also happen to be among the most expensive hotels in this guide.

Use the previous guest rating scores above as a guide only.

Oldest Casino Hotels In Las Vegas

Flamingo, Tropicana, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, LINQ and Harrah’s have all been around for 50+ years.

Among those, Caesars Palace is the highest rated hotel at number 14 / 25 as per our data above from previous guest ratings.

What does that tell us?

Well, the data would suggest we prefer newer and more polished hotels.

The oldest hotel in the top 10 best rated hotels on the Las Vegas strip by thousands of guests is Bellagio and that was opened just 25 years ago in 1998.

LINQ is in a similar boat to Flamingo in that it offers cheap rooms in a great location but the hotel needs a bit more to contend for top choice in the area.

With that said, the promenade is very popular and High Roller is a top tourist attraction. Great for the price but manage your expectations.

Pros: Cheap rooms, excellent location, good selection of restaurants, great for just wanting a bed to sleep in.

Cons: Not the most luxurious, small pool area.

Harrah’s is a slight step up from nearby Flamingo and LINQ at a similar price point.

It has an excellent central location next to Venetian and Caesars forum shops but it is lacking in its own attractions.

Donny Osmond is a big draw but otherwise you will find yourself heading out to other nearby hotels.

Pros: Donny Osmond show is popular, superb location, close to the action, affordable.

Cons: Small pool area, not the best rooms, not much going on in the hotel.

The Mirage is old but gold, very highly regarded and features a ton of excellent attractions.

The pool areas are fantastic and the common theme among reviewers is great customer service. We think The Mirage is one of the most underrated Las Vegas strip hotels.

Hard Rock has purchased the Mirage and will rebrand the name within the next few years.

Pros: Superb amenities and attractions, great pool areas, fantastic location, affordable.

Cons: For price vs location vs quality we can’t think of any.

Venetian is one of the very best Las Vegas hotels on the strip. It was our very first hotel stay in Las Vegas and we were blown away.

It is hard to beat the shopping, dining and overall luxurious aura at the Venetian. Top class everything, from shopping to dining and from nightlife to the pools.

Pros: Luxurious amenities, polished guest rooms, lavish interior, high end dining and shopping, immaculate interior, amazing pools, good location, free parking.

Cons: More expensive than the average room but well worth the splurge.

Palazzo is essentially another wing of The Venetian and it holds up to the same quality and standards set by its younger twin.

Check both hotels for best price, as you can use the same amenities. You will find more top class restaurants and more plush casino action in the Palazzo.

Pros: Luxurious amenities, polished guest rooms, high end dining and shopping, immaculate interior, amazing pools, good location, free parking.

Cons: More expensive than the average room but well worth the splurge, starting to get further out from the center.

Treasure Island is similar to The Mirage in that it is old but gold and highly regarded.

The difference is the location is further out and the hotel needs an update. Otherwise it has plenty of favorable reviews and is a good option for families.

Pros: Free parking, affordable, Mystere, kids will love Marvel Avengers.

Cons: Small pool area, on the outer edges of the popular tourist area, needs updating.

Wynn is the wynn-er of the best Las Vegas hotels on the strip according to Booking.com and Google reviewers.

Pros: Luxurious amenities, polished guest rooms, lavish interior, classy throughout, top class dining, Wynn has a twin in Encore (check both for prices).

Which Las Vegas Hotels Have We Stayed At?

Phew, that is one heck of a list of hotels!

Are you wondering which of the best Las Vegas hotels on the strip we have personally stayed at?

Well, up to the time of writing, we have stayed in 7 different hotels in Las Vegas. That includes 6 on the strip and one off the strip.

We have not yet stayed at Wynn, which is the best Las Vegas strip hotel according to Google and Booking reviewers, but it is on our list for next time.

Here are the Las Vegas hotels we have stayed at (in order of price from low to high):

  1. Luxor
  2. Excalibur
  3. Bally’s
  4. Mirage
  5. Circa (off the strip)
  6. Venetian
  7. Bellagio

Our Experiences

Lovely suite at Venetian hotel in Las Vegas

On The Strip

The first time we visited Vegas we splashed out on the Venetian and in truth it hasn’t been beaten yet. Our suite was amazing and the hotel in general is so much fun to explore.

After that we visited again on a much tighter budget, staying on the opposite end of the strip at Luxor and Excalibur.

We got rooms for something crazy like $40 a night at each hotel, but the quality difference was astonishing and they are too far from the action for our preference.

Next we tried Bally’s and Mirage because they were mid range price points in the center of the strip. Both were great for that location, but Mirage was a much better overall experience.

Finally, we decided to splash out again and stay at Bellagio. It was sublime and we loved every minute.

Our stay was almost as good as the Venetian but Bellagio was much busier and we preferred the slightly lighter crowds.

Off The Strip – Fremont Street

Why did we stay off the strip?

Well, we had already spent quite a few days on the strip during our third visit to Las Vegas and we decided to try a place away from the madness, just for one night before driving on to Valley of Fire State Park the next morning.

Fremont Street is at the heart of downtown Las Vegas and it features several hotels, casinos, open air drinking areas, indoor bars, restaurants and attractions.

The Mob Museum and Discovery Children’s Museum are also located nearby.

Circa was opened in 2020 and features a pool experience called Stadium Swim. There are 6 pools and several hot tubs all facing a 40 foot HD screen, which shows live sports and has swim up bars.

The hotel interior is modern, sleek and clean.

We had a fantastic stay at Circa and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay on Fremont Street. Note that it is adults only.

Money Saving Tips For Booking Las Vegas Hotels

You might be surprised to hear that Las Vegas has some of the cheapest hotel rooms we’ve ever seen, especially considering where it is and what you get for your money.

However, there are also plenty of expensive hotel rooms in plush hotels that will only appeal to certain visitors.

The key is deciding exactly what you want from your trip to Vegas and balancing hotel quality versus location and price.

But no matter how much you want to spend or any other external factor, there are a handful of tips you can follow to save money on hotel rooms:

1. Season

Visit Las Vegas out of season instead of in peak season. March through October are peak months and prices will be higher.

Visit Las Vegas in November or the winter months to save on hotels and potentially stay at a more luxurious hotel for the same price as a less luxurious hotel in peak season.

2. Resort fees

Every hotel in this guide has additional resort fees on top of the price advertised no matter how or where you book the room.

On Booking.com, look underneath the price displayed to see “+$60 taxes and charges” for example. That is usual tax + resort fees being added.

It helps to be aware of the resort fee up front so there are no nasty surprises when you arrive at the hotel.

3. Self Car Parking

This is an easy one to save on your overall Las Vegas hotel costs.

Simply park your car yourself in a hotel parking garage rather than have a valet park it for you.

4. Weekdays

Hotels in Las Vegas are almost always cheaper on weekdays vs on weekends. If you can plan a 5 day 4 night visit to Vegas from Monday to Friday you will get considerably cheaper room rates.

We always advise against booking hotels during holiday weekends when prices will naturally inflate.

But Las Vegas is the weekend party capital of America and hotel prices will triple or even quadruple on Friday nights and Saturday nights compared to a Tuesday or Wednesday night.

5. Events

Look for special events in Las Vegas to see when hotels will be in high demand and therefore prices sky rocketing as a result.

Think Speedway, Las Vegas Raiders home games, EDC music festival and any major conventions.

Best Hotels In Las Vegas FAQ’s

Let’s take a quick look at some of the most frequently asked questions about where to stay in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Is It Better To Stay On The Las Vegas Strip Or Off?

First time tourists visiting Las Vegas should stay on the strip. Hotels are more luxurious and conveniently located to top Vegas attractions, restaurants, pool parties, family activities and nightly shows. If you stay off the strip, you will lose time traveling to and from the strip each day.

How Many Days Is Enough To Stay In Las Vegas?

For most visitors, 3-4 days is enough time to stay in Las Vegas. You can explore the famous hotels, eat at celebrity chef restaurants, watch a show, relax by the pool, walk the strip and even take a day trip if you stay for a fourth day. International travelers should consider visiting other cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco in the same trip.

What Is The Best Part Of The Strip To Stay On In Las Vegas?

The middle section of the Las Vegas strip is the best part to book your hotel. By staying right in the center of the strip you are close to every attraction, restaurant, concert hall and shopping mall. Aria, Cosmopolitan, Planet Hollywood, Paris Las Vegas and Bellagio are all located on the best part of the Las Vegas strip.
