Why Stay In Reno NV?
Most of Reno’s tourism revolves around slot machines and blackjack tables.
However, Reno is also home to the sprawling University of Nevada complex and it is located within striking distance of popular US west coast destinations like Lake Tahoe, Lassen Volcanic National Park and Yosemite National Park.
Like many others before and after us, we used Reno as a US west coast road trip pitstop before continuing on to Lake Tahoe.
There is no doubting Reno is overlooked in favor of its far more famous and exuberant big sister, Las Vegas in terms of casinos. But that is exactly why thousands of savvy visitors each year choose Reno over Las Vegas. It is cheaper, less crowded and less overwhelming.
Reno Tahoe airport is also the transport hub for those traveling to Lake Tahoe from further afield. So if you’re not in Reno to gamble, chances are you will need a hotel close to the airport before catching a flight the next morning.
Things To Do In Reno Nevada
So what can you do if you decide to spend a night or two at a hotel in Reno NV?
Let’s take a look at what is in store for your visit:
- Photograph the famous Reno Arch
- Walk around the Nevada Museum of Art
- Stroll along the Truckee River Walk
- Take on the huge BaseCamp climbing wall at Whitney Peak Hotel
- Watch a show at Pioneer Center
- Explore the Discovery Museum
- Sip on a cocktail at Seven Troughs Speakeasy
- Walk around the National Automobile Museum
- Explore the trendy Reno Midtown area
- Drink craft beers in one of many cool breweries
- Photograph Reno at night from an elevated vista
There are loads of fun things to do around Reno and it is much more than just a “mini Las Vegas” casino destination.
We went axe throwing, walked along the river, explored Midtown, saw the city light up at night from University Ridge Park and ate a lot of great food!

Are Hotels In Reno Nevada Expensive?
All things considered, we think Reno hotels are priced right down the middle between affordable and overpriced. There are a handful of overly cheap or expensive hotels but the majority will cost exactly what you would expect to pay for lodging in a US city.
It is important to remember that all casino resorts in Reno charge an additional resort fee.
The base rate for rooms at casino hotels in Reno may appear low at first glance, but the resort fee quickly brings that price up to match the prices at non-casino Reno hotels.
Hotels near Reno-Tahoe airport are also priced surprisingly high. There is obviously a high demand for hotel rooms close the the terminal, so you will want to check prices and shop around for the best deal.
Let’s take a look at hotel tax and seasonality.
1. Hotel Tax In Reno NV
The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels in Reno NV is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
Reno is located in Washoe County, Nevada which levies 13.5% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.
So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night in Reno, your total cost is going to be $113.50.
- When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
- Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 13.5% fee for bed tax as well as other fees.
This will come as no surprise to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything. But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you go to pay!
2. Seasonality In Reno
Reno is not really a peak and low season destination like many other cities or US national parks.
The weather is good year round, people like to gamble year round and nearby Lake Tahoe is busy for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
With that said, winter prices at hotels in Reno are slightly more affordable compared with the rest of the year.
What does this mean for booking hotels in Reno NV?
Well, it means seasonality might play a small role in hotel availability and affordability for your visit to western Nevada.
You won’t benefit from “off-season” prices like you would at hotels in NYC during winter versus summer. But you will certainly find more hotels at better rates if you visit Reno in winter.
Let’s take a look at what you can expect to pay.

Where To Stay In Reno NV
Reno is a small city that can easily be divided up into 4 areas featuring hotel clusters:
- 1. Downtown Reno – Best for first time visitors, attractions and casinos
- 2. Sparks (East Reno) – Best for families and a quieter stay
- 3. South Reno – Best for business travelers and luxurious casino resorts
- 4. Reno-Tahoe Airport – Best for a Reno-Lake Tahoe transport hub
Let’s take a closer look at each area.
1. Downtown Reno
Downtown Reno is the best place to stay for first time visitors or those who like to be in the thick of the action. You can walk along the Truckee River and have easy access to the best restaurants.
Most of the top attractions in Reno are located within walking distance of Downtown.
However, we have to say Downtown Reno is a little gritty and there is a significant homeless issue, so it is not a good place to stay if you are traveling with the family.
In truth, we much preferred Midtown Reno but there are no hotel options available in the area.
2. Sparks (East Reno)
Sparks is the best place for families to stay in Reno, Nevada because it is much quieter, safer and less tacky when compared to Downtown Reno.
You would have easy access to shopping, restaurants, entertainment and major roads for getting around town.
3. South Reno
South Reno is the best place for business travelers to stay in Reno because it is the area you will find Reno-Sparks Convention Center and it is located next to Reno-Tahoe airport.
Two of the more luxurious casino resort hotels are also located down in South Reno.
4. Reno-Tahoe Airport
Reno Tahoe airport is the best place to stay if you are arriving late into Reno or flying out early from the Reno and Lake Tahoe area the next morning.
All hotels are located on the west side of the airport terminal as you look at a map. There are few amenities or places to eat in the area, so only stay here if you just need a bed to crash for the night.
We have to say the airport hotels are slightly more expensive than we imagined they wold be, but you are paying for the convenience.
