Where Do We Stay In NYC?
We have stayed at hotels in Central Park, Times Square, Midtown Manhattan, SoHo, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn during the time we lived in New York and on return visits since.
These days, we tend to book our NYC hotels in Midtown South because it is our favorite area to stay in NYC.
Why Midtown?
Because in Midtown Manhattan we get location, convenience, transport connections, value for money and a nice overall balance. No attraction is too far and no area is unreachable by subway.
Sure, we prefer the atmosphere and dining options in the more residential areas like Greenwich Village, Little Italy, Upper East Side, Lower East Side and Williamsburg.
But our purpose for visiting NYC is to see and do as much as possible in the few days we have available, which is why we stay centrally near extensive subway links but away from the tourist hotspots.
Where Should You Stay In NYC?
Think of New York City as a unicorn because it is incredibly rare to have so much choice with hotels and locations within a travel destination.
Nowhere else can you stay in this many excellent hotels in this many diverse neighborhoods.
So how do you begin narrowing down your hotel search to find a place to stay that suits your travel goals and budget?
Well, the only way to start is by breaking down the most popular NYC neighborhoods.
1. Central Park
Central Park is the most affluent area to stay in New York City.
You will find the highest density of 5 star hotels in NYC around Central Park. Plus, Upper West Side and Upper East Side in particular are quiet, safe and upscale neighborhoods.
Who Should Stay Near Central Park?
- Families with younger kids
- Those visiting NYC with a healthy travel budget
- Visitors who are in New York to shop Fifth Ave
- Anyone who plans to visit many of the best NYC museums
2. Times Square
Times Square is the cheapest, loudest and most touristy place to stay in NYC.
You will find the highest density of cheap to mid range hotels around the micro-neighborhoods of Times Square. It is the place to look for a hotel if you want the central location at low prices.
Who Should Stay In Times Square?
- Those visiting NYC on a tight budget
- Families with older kids looking for a lively atmosphere
- Anyone visiting New York to watch Broadway shows
- Those on shorter trips to NYC who want the best transport links
- Visitors who want instant access to the best NYC observation decks
3. Midtown Manhattan
Midtown Manhattan offers the perfect blend of location, cost and tranquility.
You will find the highest volume of excellent mid range hotels and affordable luxury hotels in the Midtown South area near Bryant Park. It is our favorite place to stay in New York for convenience.
Who Should Stay In Midtown Manhattan?
- First time visitors to NYC looking for a quiet location close to the action
- Those who want instant access to several subway lines
- Families or couples traveling on a mid range budget
- Anyone who wants a central Manhattan location near Empire State Building
4. SoHo
SoHo is one of the most residential and immersive places to stay in NYC.
Boutique hotels, trendy shopping streets, bustling communities and fantastic food await those who stay around the lively SoHo micro-neighborhoods.
Who Should Stay In SoHo?
- Groups of friends who want to shop, eat and socialize
- Couples or families who want a quiet and trendy place to stay in NYC
- Those with a higher travel budget who don’t want to stay near Central Park
- Foodies who want to try cuisines from around the world
5. Lower Manhattan
Lower Manhattan is among the most up and coming places to book hotels in NYC.
The Downtown Manhattan Financial District is no longer just for business travel, with plenty of tourist attractions on the doorstep in a safe and affordable part of New York.
Who Should Stay In Lower Manhattan?
- Families, couples and solo travelers who want a quiet and safe place to stay in New York
- Business travel for midweek work visits to NYC
- Those who want to be near many of the best NYC photo spots
- Return visitors looking for something a bit different
6. Brooklyn
Brooklyn is one of our top picks for return visitors to NYC.
The borough of Brooklyn is enormous, but we suggest only focusing on Downtown Brooklyn or in particular Williamsburg. Hotels are quiet, trendy and have easy access to Manhattan.
Who Should Stay In Brooklyn?
- Return visitors to New York
- Those who want a relaxing stay with easy access to attractions
- Anyone who plans to spend time around Dumbo and Brooklyn Bridge
- Visitors who prefer authenticity and a real NY feel
- Groups of friends who want to eat and drink in a fun setting
Where To Avoid Staying In NYC
Now you know the best places to stay in New York City, what about the places you should avoid?
Well, this is actually the easy part!
Let’s say the majority of visitors are going to have between 3-5 days in NYC to see and do as much as possible. You can instantly rule out staying in Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island based on location.
That leaves Manhattan and Brooklyn as your 2 boroughs to choose between because they have the most convenient access to the best things to do in New York City.
Where To Avoid Staying In Manhattan
Within Manhattan, we think staying anywhere below 96th Street in both Upper East Side and Upper West Side is fine. There are of course better and worse areas but on the whole you should have no issues as long as you use common sense.
Essentially, anywhere in Manhattan Island below this point is going to get you close enough to attractions and in the touristy areas while remaining safe.
With that said, we always recommend families avoid the Lower East Side, Bowery and Chinatown areas as they are better suited to the young crowd looking to socialize and party.
Where To Avoid Staying In Brooklyn
Many visitors to New York choose to stay in Brooklyn instead of Manhattan for a more authentic and residential experience.
If you do stay in Brooklyn, we recommend you stick to Williamsburg or Downtown Brooklyn close to Dumbo and the Brooklyn Bridge. Both areas are safe and great places to stay.
There are some hairy parts of Brooklyn to avoid further east and south. Also, there’s not much point staying too far into Brooklyn because you would end up spending your days riding the subway.
How Many Days Is Enough In New York City?
We think a 4 days in NYC itinerary is the perfect starting point for those who have never visited New York before.
Why?
Because 2 days is definitely not enough time, 3 days can be just enough time if you are quick and only have a few attractions to see, 5 days begins to get expensive and 6 days is only really for those who want to see everything in one trip.
Four days strikes the perfect balance between cost, taking time off work, amount of attractions you can see and overall speed of visit.
These days we always plan for 4 day visits to New York City and we recommend 4 days to our friends and families.
NYC Passes
If you plan to visit the top tourist attractions in NYC, we highly recommend you read our popular comparison of the 4 New York Passes.
Our personal favorite is the New York Sightseeing Pass because it has the most flexibility and attractions at an excellent price point.
Want to save money on NYC attractions? Take advantage of our exclusive 10% discount on any New York Sightseeing Pass via our sister site Where Are Those Morgans!
Are New York City Hotels Expensive?
When compared to other cities in the US and around the world, it is safe to say that New York City hotels are above average in nightly price.
But we have stayed in several places around the world in which hotel prices were far higher.
For example, average nightly prices at hotels in Hawaii, San Francisco, London and Switzerland are all more expensive than hotels in NYC.
Why Are Hotels In New York Cheaper?
It all comes down to competition and volume of low budget hotel options.
Demand for hotels in NYC is enormous as you might imagine, but supply is even bigger. Sky high competition to fill hotel beds drives prices down so we all benefit from more reasonable prices.
We think the taboo topic around NYC being too expensive needs to be quashed.
There are hundreds of cheap hotels in New York with good ratings and locations. Those visiting NYC on a budget are spoiled for choice when compared to places like San Francisco or London.
Let’s take a look at hotel tax and seasonality, which will play a role in how much your NYC hotel costs.
1. Hotel Tax In NYC
The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels in New York City is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
All New York City hotels levy a 14.75% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.
So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night at a Times Square hotel, your total cost is going to be $114.75.
- When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
- Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 14.75% fee for bed tax and other fees.
You will also see a “city tax” fee of around $3.50 / night added to every room and some hotels might even throw in a “resort fee“.
This will come as no surprise to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything.
But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you go to pay.
2. Seasonality In NYC
New York City is a year round bucket list travel destination but it does have a peak season and a slightly lower season.
- 1. Peak season in New York City is from May through October and Christmas
- 2. Low season in New York City is from November through April with the exception of Christmas
What does this mean for booking hotels in New York?
Well, it means seasonality will definitely play a huge role in hotel availability and affordability for your visit to NYC.
You stand a much better chance of picking up a lower nightly rate if you book a hotel for a trip to NYC in winter. Hotel prices are especially cheap in January and February because they are less desirable times to visit.
Prices at hotels in New York naturally inflate heavily in the summer months when tourism peaks. It is important to note that you will pay a lot more money for a New York hotel in summer.
