Where Is SoHo In New York?

SoHo NYC is a trendy neighborhood located to the south of Manhattan Island, encompassing Houston Street to the north, Canal Street to the south, Sixth Avenue to the west and Lafayette Street to the east.

However, for the purposes of this guide to the best hotels in SoHo NYC, we are going to include the areas which border SoHo in the neighborhoods of Little Italy, Nolita, Tribeca, Bowery and Lower East Side into this one greater overall area called SoHo.

What does SoHo stand for in New York?

The acronym of SoHo in New York is short for South of Houston Street, which is essentially Manhattan’s 1st Street but without the title because “# Street” doesn’t begin until 3rd Street.

Where To Stay In SoHo New York

The famous cobblestone streets and iron clad building exteriors of SoHo are popular tourist attractions among visitors to New York, but where should you stay in the area?

Let’s break down SoHo NYC into micro areas:

West SoHo

The west side of SoHo has affordable hotels and a huge amount of places to eat out. You will find Canal Street subway stations with access to both the red and blue line.

This is a great place to stay for easy access to transit, budget hotels and a lively atmosphere.

Central SoHo

The quintessential part of SoHo is right in the center surrounded by fashionable boutiques and high end art galleries. Hotels are more expensive and you will have to walk to Spring Street subway stations on either side of Spring Street.

This is the quietest and most expensive place to stay in SoHo. Transit access isn’t as easy and you will likely have to walk a few blocks to find restaurants.

East SoHo

Little Italy is a full-of-life area to stay in SoHo suitable for all visitors. As a general rule, the closer you get to Bowery or Lower East Side, the cheaper your hotel will become.

This is the best place for the younger crowd to stay around SoHo for easy access to a thriving party scene. You can use Bowery or Grand Street subway stations on this side of SoHo.

Where To Avoid Staying Around SoHo

Now you know about the areas of SoHo, what about the places you should not book a hotel in the area?

Families should avoid Lower East Side area of SoHo because it has more of a party atmosphere and is a little grittier. Families will be better off staying in the center of SoHo where it is quieter.

Solo travelers and couples will be fine in any area of SoHo in terms of safety. We suggest solo travelers and couples choose a SoHo hotel based on a preference between the east being the liveliest party area, the center being quieter and the west being in between.

Business travelers should stay in the south of SoHo near Tribeca for easy access to the Financial District in Downtown Manhattan.

Our SoHo Hotels Experience

SoHo was the last place we explored when living in New York City, but it quickly became one of our favorite places to eat out and socialize with other locals or tourists.

The first time we visited SoHo was during Winter in NYC when we were staying at hotels across the city so we could write a more authentic guide on the best places to stay.

We stayed at Arlo SoHo and had a great experience. It is close to Canal Street subway lines and is in a quiet location not far from the action in SoHo.

Since moving out of New York, we have stayed at NobleDEN and CitizenM Bowery during separate visits to the city. Both were fantastic stays and we would happily return to either next time we stay near SoHo.

In truth, we tend to book our NYC hotels in Midtown South because it is our personal favorite area to stay in New York.

But we do think SoHo is a fantastic place to stay for a first time visit to NYC.

Who Should Stay In SoHo?

SoHo is the perfect place for families, couples or groups to stay for high end shopping, socializing, eating out, mixing with local residents and even celebrity spotting if that is your thing.

If you have a healthy budget for your visit to NYC and don’t want to stay at a luxury hotel near Central Park, we think SoHo has some of the best alternatives in Manhattan.

The final group of people who might want to consider staying in SoHo is foodies. SoHo and excellent dining options go hand in hand, with no end to high quality eateries in the area.

One of our top recommendations is to spend time walking around Nolita and of course Little Italy to try some of the very best pizza in NYC.

Things To Do Around SoHo

So what can you do in the immediate area if you book a hotel in SoHo NYC?

Outside of eating, drinking and shopping, there really isn’t much else to do in SoHo.

You will have to take subways to Central Park, Times Square, Midtown, Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to tick off the best things to do in NYC.

Here are the top things to do around SoHo:

Are SoHo Hotels Expensive?

SoHo hotels are slightly above average in cost when compared to other popular tourist areas of New York City like Central Park, Times Square and Midtown South.

The good news is SoHo has a wide spread of hotel costs spanning the budget range from cheap to 5 star. This means any type of traveler can stay in SoHo NYC.

We would say that hotels are priced fairly for the unique buzz and boutiquey aura around SoHo. Hotels are more expensive around Central Park and cheaper around Times Square.

Let’s take a look at hotel tax and seasonality.

1. Tax On Hotels In SoHo New York

The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels in SoHo is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

All New York City hotels levy a 14.75% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.

So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night at a SoHo hotel, your total cost is going to be $114.75.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 14.75% fee for bed tax and other fees.

You will also see a “city tax” fee of around $3.50 / night added to every room and some hotels might even try to throw in a “resort fee“.

This will come as no surprise to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything.

But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you go to pay.

2. Seasonality In New York

New York City is a year round bucket list travel destination but it does have a peak season and a slightly lower season.

  • 1. Peak season in New York City is from May through October
  • 2. Low season in New York City is from November through April

What does this mean for booking hotels in SoHo New York City?

Well, it means seasonality can potentially play a huge role in hotel availability and affordability for your visit to NYC.

You stand a much better chance of picking up a lower nightly rate if you book a SoHo hotel in winter. We have noticed hotel prices are especially cheap in January and February, but New York can be brutally cold and bleak in winter.

Prices at hotels in SoHo naturally inflate heavily in the summer months when tourism peaks.

So what is a good solution?

We recommend planning your visit to New York in April or a similar shoulder season month like May, September or October.

This way you benefit from the perfect balance between crowds, weather and prices.
