Best Brooklyn Hotels By Category

Are you in a hurry and just want to know the very best Brooklyn hotels in specific travel categories?

Here are our top recommendations:

We have stayed at Wythe Hotel which was wonderful and we would be more than happy to stay in any of the other hotels listed above on our next visit to New York.

But we will take a much closer look at each of these Brooklyn hotels and more in this guide.

Where To Stay In Brooklyn NY

The New York borough of Brooklyn is gigantic.

Did you know that if Brooklyn was its own city, it would have the 4th highest population in the United States?

Over 2.5 million residents call Brooklyn home, which is about the same as Chicago. Naturally, narrowing down a hotel search in such a vast and densely populated region is challenging.

You could stay in any of 70 Brooklyn neighborhoods, but we recommend first time visitors to New York only consider Downtown Brooklyn or Williamsburg.

Why?

Well, because they are the two most popular touristy neighborhoods close to Manhattan and New York’s top attractions.

Staying deeper into Brooklyn would give you more a residential feel but it would mean spending a lot of time riding subways to reach tourist sights.

Downtown Brooklyn vs Williamsburg

OK, so you know that Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg are the two most popular places to stay in the borough of Brooklyn.

But which one of the two neighborhoods should you book a hotel?

Let’s take a summarized look at both areas.

1. Downtown Brooklyn

Downtown Brooklyn is a bustling metropolis of its own accord. It is a complete contrast to Manhattan and you can really tell the difference.

There are a handful of museums, parks and tourist attractions that are well worth a visit to the area.

Most visitors to New York will walk the Brooklyn Bridge to the Dumbo neighborhood in Brooklyn. But walk just a little further into Brooklyn and you will quickly reach Downtown.

2. Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Williamsburg is a trendy, hipster neighborhood with a chilled vibe and pubs spilling out onto the streets.

This is the place to stay in Brooklyn if you are looking for the sort of vacation that involves plenty of eating, drinking and socializing.

We really like Williamsburg and find ourselves visiting more and more each time we are back in New York. The relaxed, easy going aura in Williamsburg is a welcome break from the chaos in Manhattan.

Where To Avoid Staying Around Brooklyn

Now you know the most popular places to stay in Brooklyn, what about the places you should not book a hotel in the area?

Anyone visiting New York wanting to stay in Brooklyn should stick as close to Manhattan as possible. Not only does it make sense to be closer to most NYC attractions, but it is also safer and more touristy.

If you do a little research online, you will see the neighborhoods of East New York, Canarsie, East Flatbush, Brownsville, Ocean Hill, East Bed-Stuy and Bushwick mentioned regularly as places to avoid in Brooklyn.

We haven’t personally been to any of those areas except Bushwick to see the street art. But from a purely logistical perspective, we wouldn’t consider booking a hotel so far east or south when visiting New York City anyway.

Look out for our interactive map a little later in the guide which shows you where to avoid staying in Brooklyn.

Our Brooklyn Hotel Experience

We have stayed at Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg and EVEN Hotel in Downtown Brooklyn.

Both were excellent for what we wanted at the time. Wythe Hotel is located perfectly for socializing in Williamsburg and EVEN Hotel is close to the best of Downtown Brooklyn.

Next time we are in Brooklyn, we would like to stay at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge which has one of the best views of any hotel in NYC.

These days we tend to book our NYC hotels in Midtown Manhattan because it is our personal favorite area to stay in New York.

But Brooklyn is a fantastic place to stay for many first time visitors to NYC.

Who Should Stay In Brooklyn?

Brooklyn is the best place to stay in NY for those who want an authentic life in New York experience but without sacrificing on convenience or ease of access to top attractions.

Those on longer trips to NY, big groups of friends looking for something a little different and couples or families who want a quieter and less touristy experience should also consider staying in Brooklyn.

If the tourist traps and chaos of Manhattan don’t appeal to you, maybe the laid back residential Williamsburg with down to earth pubs and restaurants is a better fit for you?

There are 3 subway lines (brown, orange and silver on the map) easily connecting Williamsburg with various stations in Manhattan. So you can easily visit the best NYC observation decks and other famous landmarks if staying across the East River.

Pros + Cons

Let’s take a quick look at the major pros and cons to booking a hotel in Brooklyn NY.

Pros

  • Completely different NY experience
  • Incredibly diverse range of places to eat and drink
  • Far less touristy than Manhattan

Cons

  • Harder to reach top attractions around NY
  • Subway stations are further apart
  • Not the traditional New York experience

So what can you do in the immediate area if you book a hotel in Brooklyn NY?

Well, Brooklyn is one of those places you could eat, drink and chat your way through an entire vacation. You can visit trendy bars or dive bars and dine out at any type of restaurant you can imagine.

Bedford Ave and Berry Street in Williamsburg are great for sitting outside and enjoying a cold beer on a sunny day in New York.

But there are plenty of places to visit if you prefer to be more active.

Here are just some spots to see around Brooklyn:

Are Brooklyn Hotels Expensive?

Nightly hotel prices are lower on average in Brooklyn when compared to hotels in Manhattan. The supply of hotels in Brooklyn is far less, but so is the demand for those hotels.

Manhattan is overflowing with hotel options spanning the budget range from cheap hostels to eye watering costs at true 5 star luxury hotels.

Conversely, Brooklyn has fewer hotel options overall with a shallower range of prices and quality.

We think you will find hotels in Brooklyn to be around what you expect, never surprisingly affordable but also never eyebrow raising at the expensive end of the spectrum.

Let’s take a look at hotel tax and seasonality.

1. Tax On Hotels In Brooklyn NY

The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels in Brooklyn is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

All New York City and Brooklyn hotels levy a 14.75% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.

So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night at a Brooklyn hotel, your total cost is going to be $114.75.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 14.75% fee for bed tax and other fees.

You will also see a “city tax” fee of around $3.50 / night added to every room and some hotels might even try to throw in a “resort fee“.

This will come as no surprise to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything.

But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you go to pay.

2. Seasonality In NYC

New York City is a year round bucket list travel destination but it does have a peak season and a slightly lower season.

  • 1. Peak season in New York City is from May through October
  • 2. Low season in New York City is from November through April

What does this mean for booking hotels in Brooklyn?

Well, it means seasonality can potentially play a huge role in hotel availability and affordability for your visit to New York.

You stand a much better chance of picking up a lower nightly rate if you book a Brooklyn hotel during a visit to New York in winter. We have noticed hotel prices are especially cheap in January and February.

Prices at hotels in Brooklyn naturally inflate heavily in the summer months when tourism peaks.

One of the best ways to balance crowds, prices, availability and overall experience is to visit New York in April or another shoulder month like October.

    • Hi Jane, at the moment we don’t write about vacation rentals or apartments but if it were us we would look at VRBO and Airbnb. The areas around Bryant Park are great for a central location with easy access to attractions and transport links, or if you want a more residential place to stay in Manhattan you could try the SoHo, Greenwich Village, West Village and Chelsea areas. Have a fantastic trip!
