Technically, Midtown Manhattan covers a huge portion of central Manhattan Island from 59th Street at Central Park as far south as 14th Street at Union Square.
However, we think that area is far too large to narrow down your hotel search, so in this guide we are classifying Midtown Manhattan as the following:
- South of Times Square
- North of Flatiron District
- Between Madison Avenue and 7th Avenue
This central strip of Manhattan is also known as Midtown South. It is our favorite place to book hotels when we visit New York and we highly recommend the area to all first time visitors to NYC.
Midtown South is where you will find Bryant Park, NoMad, Koreatown, Empire State Building, Macy’s and the northeastern side of Chelsea.
The Midtown South area is perfect for families, couples, business visitors and solo travelers because it is safe, calm, filled with restaurants and hosts countless classy hotels.
What Are The Best Places To Stay In Midtown NYC?
Hotels from 28th Street to 40th Street between 5th Avenue and 7th Avenue are all located excellently for transport links, dining options and top NYC attractions.
Specifically, if we had to pick one single place to stay in Midtown, it would be directly south of Bryant Park.
Staying close to Bryant Park puts you in a quiet location at the heart of New York City but away from the chaos of nearby Times Square.
Every time we revisit New York, we begin our hotel search to the south of Bryant Park and work down to 28th Street, looking between 5th Ave and 7th Ave.
NoMad is a trendy up and coming place to stay in Midtown South and we think it will only get more popular over time.
Our top piece of advice when you book a hotel in Midtown Manhattan is to stay close to a subway station. We will include closest subway stations for every hotel covered in this guide.
Where Should You Avoid Staying Around Midtown?
Now you know where to stay in Midtown NYC, what about the places you should not book a hotel in the area?
Honestly, the areas of Midtown Manhattan we are covering in this guide are all perfectly safe to stay in. But it goes without saying the closer you get to Times Square, the tackier, louder and more touristy it gets.
If you are expanding your Midtown search, we would say Garment District and the streets around Madison Square Garden can be gritty. Families with younger kids might want to stay clear of booking hotels in these areas.
If you are at all unsure about safety or just want to put yourself in the very best spot, we recommend staying between Bryant Park and the Empire State Building.
Our Midtown Manhattan Hotel Experience
Midtown Manhattan is the beating heart of New York City. Once you have visited Central Park and Times Square, you will find yourself gravitating back to Midtown because it is filled with attractions and transport links.
After living in New York and visiting more times than we care to count since leaving, we have narrowed down our search area for booking hotels in NYC to the Midtown South area.
So far we have stayed in 4 hotels in the Midtown neighborhood; Cambria Hotel, MOXY Chelsea, New York Manhattan Hotel and Archer Hotel.
Cambria, MOXY and Archer were all fantastic experiences. Archer Hotel in particular was excellent and we recommend this hotel to our friends and family.
New York Manhattan Hotel was fine but it definitely wasn’t as good as others in its price category. We booked it last minute because it was cheap and in the location we wanted, but we wouldn’t stay again.
Overall, we always book hotels in Midtown Manhattan NYC unless we need to be in another part of the city for a specific reason.
Who Should Stay In Midtown NYC?
Midtown Manhattan is the perfect place for families, couples and mid range budget travelers to stay in New York City. It is safe, close to top attractions and full of high quality hotels that won’t break the bank.
In comparison, Central Park is better for luxury hotels and families with young kids, whereas Times Square is better for low budget hotels and families with older kids who want a lively atmosphere.
Midtown goes right down the middle offering the best of both worlds.
We also think first time visitors to NYC are best suited to staying in Midtown because it is central and has easy subway access to popular tourist attractions around Manhattan and Brooklyn.
You are within walking distance of Times Square, Fifth Avenue and several of the best NYC observation decks.

Hotel prices in Midtown Manhattan are around the average cost for a New York City hotel. The nightly cost at a hotel in Midtown is less than in Central Park but more than in Times Square.
The overwhelming majority of hotels around Midtown are perfect for the mid range travel budget.
If you visit New York in winter during the off season, you can expect average prices of around $200 – $350 per night at a hotel in Midtown.
However, prices in peak season during the warmer summer months will naturally be more expensive.

1. Tax On Hotels In Midtown NYC
The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels in Midtown Manhattan is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
All New York City hotels levy a 14.75% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.
So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night at a Midtown NYC hotel, your total cost is going to be $114.75.
- When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
