What Is The Best Place To Stay For Bryce Canyon National Park?

All things considered, Bryce Canyon City is the best place to stay near Bryce Canyon National Park for short term stays. However, the small town of Tropic, UT is the best place to stay near Bryce Canyon for long term stays.

Bryce Canyon City is located less than 3 miles from Bryce Canyon Visitor Center inside the park, which is the closest you can stay to the top hikes and famous amphitheater without camping.

Being so close to the park means you can easily access the hiking trails and photo spots at sunrise or sunset if you only have one or two days at the park.

The downside to staying in Bryce Canyon City is a lack of quality amenities and places to eat.

Tropic offers far better eateries and higher quality lodging near Bryce Canyon. If you are visiting the area for 3 or more days, you should stay in Tropic and drive 11 miles into Bryce Canyon each day.

Where To Stay Near Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park does not have a convenient town on its doorstep filled with hotels and places to eat, like Zion has Springdale or Acadia has Bar Harbor.

Here are the two best places to stay near Bryce Canyon National Park:

1. Bryce Canyon City offers 3 hotels close to the park. Two are affordable and one is higher quality but also more expensive.

2. Tropic is a great place to stay near Bryce Canyon because it has a handful of excellent restaurants and is just 15 minutes drive. You can find detached log cabin style rooms in Tropic, which might suit light sleepers more than a motel or hotel closer to the park entrance.

Alternative Options

But if all hotels in Bryce Canyon City and Tropic are either full or too expensive, where should you look next?

Well, there are a handful of low budget motel style lodging options scattered along UT-12 you can use as backup options.

Right at the junction of US-89 and UT-12 (heading for Zion from Bryce Canyon), you can book into 2 of the cheapest hotels near Bryce Canyon at either Rodeway Inn or Quality Inn.

Bryce Canyon Lodge

Bryce Canyon has one official park lodging option aptly named “Bryce Canyon Lodge”.

The lodge has a fantastic location close to the rim of Bryce amphitheater and it has an on site restaurant. Lodge rooms and cabins are available.

The upside to staying at the lodge is convenient access to trails, sunrises and sunsets. The downsides to staying at Bryce Canyon Lodge are low availability and high costs.

We just mocked up a booking for August 8th 2023 and a room at the lodge costs $284 / night after tax, whereas a cabin costs $303 / night after tax.

May 2023 has very little availability at time of writing (January 14th 2023).

If you want to stay at Bryce Canyon Lodge, we strongly advise you book a room as soon as possible. You can only book through the official Bryce Canyon Lodging website.

Are Hotels Near Bryce Canyon Expensive?

No, hotels near Bryce Canyon National Park are not expensive. In fact, you might find prices are surprisingly affordable year round.

Two of the three hotels in Bryce Canyon City are lower budget hotel options ranging in price from $100 / night in low season to $200 / night in peak season.

The third hotel in Bryce Canyon City is a more luxurious offering ranging in price from $130 / night in low season to around $400 / night in peak season.

Outside of Bryce Canyon City, hotels range in price from very cheap to mid range. There are no luxury hotels near Bryce Canyon with exorbitant nightly costs.

With that said, there are two important things we want to make you aware of before booking your hotel near Bryce Canyon.

1. Hotel Tax In Bryce Canyon

The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels near Bryce Canyon is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

Bryce Canyon is located in Garfield County, Utah which levies 14.87% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.

The 14.87% is made up of hotel tax + municipality tax.

So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night in a Bryce Canyon hotel, your total cost is going to be $114.87

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 14.87% fee for bed tax and other fees.

This is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay!

2. Seasonality In Bryce Canyon

Bryce Canyon National Park has a clear peak season and a clear low season:

  • Peak season in Bryce Canyon consists of the late spring, summer and early fall months between May and October.
  • Off season in Bryce Canyon is made up of the colder winter season months from November through April.

We visited Bryce Canyon in October and the park was much quieter than we expected. Our previous 3 days spent hiking the best trails in Zion National Park were a complete contrast, Zion was jam packed!

October is a fantastic month to visit Bryce Canyon because it is cooler, free of crowds and hotels have plenty of availability at affordable rates.

What does this mean for booking hotels around Bryce Canyon?

Well, it means seasonality will play a small role in hotel availability and affordability for your visit.

You stand a better chance of picking up a lower nightly rate if you book a Bryce Canyon hotel in winter or the shoulder months. Bryce Canyon hotel prices are especially cheap in January and February.

Nightly prices for guest rooms near Bryce Canyon inflate the most between May and August.

We highly recommend booking in advance to save money on hotels near Bryce Canyon, particularly if you plan to visit in summer.
