Why Stay In Moab UT?

Moab is one of the very best places to stay in eastern Utah for hikers, photographers and lovers of unique landscapes.

The small desert city of Moab is idyllically located just 5 miles from the entrance to Arches National Park and 30 miles from Canyonlands National Park’s popular Island in the Sky region.

Moab is a very popular stop half way around the traditional Utah road trip route. Many visitors to Moab are driving a loop including Zion, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley and even Grand Canyon.

Despite being a small and intimate city, Moab has plenty of excellent places to eat and a wide range of well regarded hotels available.

Out of all the towns near national parks in Utah and Arizona, we think Moab is up there with the likes of Springdale and Kanab as the best places to spend a few days.

Things To Do Near Moab

So what can you do if you decide to spend two or three nights at a hotel in Moab UT?

Well, for starters you will find two of the best hikes in the US at Arches and one of America’s most remarkable sunrises at Canyonlands.

Let’s take a look at what is in store for your visit:

Moab is essentially a fantastic base visitors use for exploring the two famous parks. In this guide we are going to show you the best hotels near Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

Are Hotels In Moab Utah Expensive?

Yes, hotels in Moab UT are surprisingly expensive. We really like Moab and it is incredibly convenient for Arches and Canyonlands, but hotels prices are definitely on the higher end.

We have recently written guides for the best hotels in Kanab Utah and best hotels in Page AZ. Both are on the same popular Utah and Arizona road trip loop, and both are much cheaper places to stay when compared with Moab.

We are sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Moab is by far the best place to stay for Arches and Canyonlands.

Therefore our advice is to absorb the cost in Moab and make it back up in other parts of Utah or Arizona.

Let’s take a look at hotel tax and seasonality.

1. Hotel Tax In Moab UT

The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels near Moab Utah is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

Moab is located in Grand County, Utah which levies 14.92% hotel tax on all stays, no matter how you book your room.

So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night in Moab, your total cost is going to be $114.92.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 13.77% fee for bed tax and other fees.

This will come as no surprise to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything. But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you go to pay!

2. Seasonality In Moab

Moab has two distinct peak seasons, one shoulder season and one distinct low season.

  • 1. Peak seasons in Moab consists of the spring and fall months of March, April, May, September, October and November.
  • 2. Shoulder season in Moab is during the hot summer months of June, July and August.
  • 3. Low season in Moab consists of the winter months December, January and February.

What does this mean for booking hotels in Moab Utah?

Well, it means seasonality will play a huge role in hotel availability and affordability for your visit to eastern Utah.

You stand a much better chance of picking up a lower nightly rate if you book a Moab hotel in winter. We have noticed hotel prices are especially cheap in January and February.

Prices at hotels in Moab inflate heavily in spring, dip slightly in summer and rise again in fall.

Let’s take a look at what you can expect to pay.
