Our Williams Hotels Experience

We have visited Grand Canyon South Rim twice so far and during those trips we stayed in 4 different hotels.

  • The first time we stayed in Bright Angel Lodge on the rim edge and Grand Canyon Inn in the tiny area called Grand Canyon Junction.
  • The second time we stayed at Best Western Premier in Tusayan and Best Western Plus in Williams.

Our stay at the Best Western in Williams was fantastic and just what we needed after hiking the incredible South Kaibab to Bright Angel Trail from rim to river.

We ate dinner and breakfast in the on site restaurant, spent a well deserved hour in the outdoor hot tub on a cold night in December and we had a great nights sleep.

The next morning we explored the small town of Williams, eating lunch in a great little cafe and checking out the old Route 66 areas before driving down to our next road trip stop, the adventure playground of Sedona Arizona.

Is Williams A Good Place To Stay For The Grand Canyon?

Yes, Williams is a fantastic place to stay for visiting Grand Canyon South Rim.

You will benefit from cheaper hotel prices and more hotel room availability, as well as a much better selection of restaurants when compared to the likes of Grand Canyon Junction, Tusayan and even staying at a National Park lodge.

However, staying in Williams is far less convenient for accessing the popular viewpoints and best hikes at Grand Canyon South Rim.

Who Should Stay In Williams?

We recommend booking a hotel in Williams AZ if you fall under any of the following criteria:

  • You don’t mind driving 1 hour to reach Grand Canyon South Rim.
  • Convenience is not top of your priority list.
  • You want more control over hotel quality and cost.
  • You are visiting Grand Canyon South Rim on a tight budget.
  • Eating out is important to your group.
  • You are on a road trip and only want to visit Grand Canyon for one day.

Williams offers a great balance between cost, amenities and convenience but it will not suit everyone visiting the area.

Who Should Not Stay In Williams?

We do not recommend booking a hotel in Williams AZ if you fall under any of the following criteria:

  • You want instant access to the viewpoints and hikes on South Rim.
  • Convenience is your number one priority.
  • You have a healthier travel budget.
  • Dining options are not a priority.
  • You want to enjoy the best sunrise and sunset spots in Grand Canyon.

Take a closer look at Grand Canyon Junction, Tusayan and National Park lodges if you want to be closer to the South Rim action.

Are Hotels In Williams AZ Expensive?

No, hotels in Williams, Arizona are extremely affordable when compared with other nearby areas such as Tusayan or Sedona.

If you are visiting Grand Canyon on a low budget, Williams offers the most affordable place to stay overall when you take into account quality, amenities and location.

Hotel prices are competitive because the small town of Williams is a 1 hour drive from South Rim, which means the hotels have to offer lower prices to attract budget conscious visitors to the Grand Canyon.

With that said, there are two important things we want to make you aware of before booking your hotel in Williams AZ.

1. Hotel Tax At Williams Arizona Hotels

The first thing you should bear in mind when booking hotels in Williams AZ is “Hotel Tax“, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

Hotels in Williams are typically subject to added tax of around 11.4%, no matter if you book through a hotel search engine like Booking or by going direct with the hotel.

So, let’s say a room costs $100.00 for one night in a Williams hotel. Your total cost is going to be $111.40.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 11.4% fee for bed tax and other fees.

Additionally, keep a close eye out for any additional fees such as cleaning fees or property service fees.

These fees can add substantial amounts to the overall cost but it is important to know they will be charged no matter how you book a stay at the hotel.

Taxes and fees are something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay!

2. Seasonality In Williams

Williams has a clear peak season and a clear low season based on visitor numbers to Grand Canyon National Park and driving along the historic Route 66:

  • Peak season consists of spring, summer and fall months between April and November.
  • Off season is made up of the colder winter season months from December through March.

Williams hotel rooms are in higher demand between May and October. It helps to book in advance but you should expect to pay higher peak season prices.

We have personally visited the Grand Canyon in winter and it was a wonderful experience. Hotels were cheap and available, there were no crowds on trails and it even snowed one day.
