It’s not as convenient for accessing the park as Tusayan or Valle, but Williams has a better range of hotels in all budget categories, and it also has much higher quality places to eat out. We’ve stayed in hotels all around Grand Canyon South Rim, and we think Williams works best if you’re happy to day trip into the park.

Our Experience

Couple taking a selfie on a hike in the Grand Canyon
Selfie of us hiking at Grand Canyon South Rim

We’ve stayed in 4 different hotels around Grand Canyon South Rim across trips in October 2019 and December 2021. The first time we stayed in Bright Angel Lodge on the rim and Grand Canyon Inn in a tiny area near the rim called Grand Canyon Junction (also known as Valle). And the second time we stayed at Best Western Premier in Tusayan and Best Western Plus in Williams.

Our stay at the Best Western in Williams was fantastic, and just what we needed after day hiking the amazing Rim-to-River Trail. We ate dinner and breakfast in the on site restaurant and spent a well deserved hour in the outdoor hot tub on a cold night. The next morning we explored the small town of Williams, eating lunch in a great little cafe and checking out the old Route 66 areas before driving down to Sedona.

Affordability

Hotels in Williams AZ are high quality and extremely affordable. You’ll find much better value in Williams than you will in Tusayan or by staying in a Grand Canyon run lodge on the rim, plus you’d have far more dining options. But you’re giving up the convenience factor, so it depends on what’s most important to you.

We think Williams is perfect if you just want to day trip into the park, or you want to stay somewhere with more amenities the night after your Grand Canyon itinerary ends. We stayed in Williams for a night after a long day hiking in the park and before driving down to Sedona. And the price we got was great.

Added Tax

Bear in mind when booking your hotel in Williams that you’ll pay 11.4% hotel tax per night on top of your base rate.

So, let’s say the basic nightly room cost at a hotel is $100.00 for one night, your actual total cost is going to be at $111.40 per night.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for includes taxes and fees. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like +$30 for taxes and fees, that means you’ll pay the hotel room cost + the additional 11.4% tax.

Our Verdict

Kristen soaking up majestic Grand Canyon views

Williams AZ offers you quality hotels at excellent prices, a great selection of restaurants and a relatively convenient base to use for visiting Grand Canyon South Rim. It’s important to know that it’s a 1 hour drive from Williams to reach the Rim, so booking a hotel here works better if you’re happy to day trip into the park.

We really enjoyed our stay at Best Western Plus, but the next time we visit Williams we’d stay at either Sheridan House Inn, Trapper’s Rendezvous or Inn History because they all have fantastic reviews from previous guests.
