8 Top Rated Hotels Near Capitol Reef National Park

8 best hotels near Capitol Reef National Park by Best Hotels Anywhere

Capitol Reef National Park has no official park run lodges, so you’ll need to book a hotel in nearby Torrey if you want to stay close to the park’s hikes, viewpoints and scenic drives. Torrey has a good selection of places you can book no matter your budget, but you can also consider staying further from the park in Hanksville or Escalante.

In this guide we show you the best hotels near Capitol Reef National Park for all budgets, based on our experiences.

Our Experience In Capitol Reef

Here we are at sunset point on a beautiful day in Capitol Reef

We visited Capitol Reef as part of our very first 3 month US road trip. After spending time in Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Salt Lake City, we drove south for the Utah Mighty 5 and Capitol Reef was our first national park stop in Utah. It’s easy to visit, quiet and great for the whole family. Read more about us.

We were surprised by how much we enjoyed Capitol Reef because there’s typically less hype when compared to the likes of Zion or Arches. We spent a night at Austin’s Chuckwagon Lodge on Torrey’s main street, and the next morning we grabbed a tasty breakfast nearby at The Wild Rabbit Cafe. It all worked great!

CLOSEST: The small town of Torrey, Utah is the closest place you stay near Capitol Reef at just 10.5 miles from the visitor center in Fruita. But it’s not just the most convenient place to stay, it also has a great selection of quality hotels, inns and unique lodgings. You can be inside park boundaries within minutes after leaving Torrey, and there’s a handful of excellent places to eat dinner once you get back to town.

ALTERNATES: If you’re visiting Capitol Reef either side of Moab, you could spend a night in Hanksville near Goblin Valley State Park. Or if you’re planning to visit Bryce Canyon either side of Capitol Reef, you might consider spending a night in Escalante on the awesome scenic byway 12.

Park Lodging

It’s important to know there’s no national park lodging of any type inside Capitol Reef. You can stay at Fruita Campground in the heart of the park, but there are limited spaces and it’s very popular so you’ll need to book in advance.

Having no park run lodges may sound disappointing at first. But a positive spin is that it eliminates any decision for you to make when considering where to stay when you visit Capitol Reef. In our vast experience at national parks, we’ve often found that park run lodges are more expensive than nearby hotels, so you’ll save money by staying in Torrey anyway.

We think you’ll find that hotels near Capitol Reef are priced fairly, especially considering you’ll be on the doorstep to a national park. Cheaper hotels in Torrey will cost you around $130-150 per night and more expensive hotels will cost upwards of $250 per night, depending on the day and month you book.

We had a look at prices in different seasons and there isn’t an enormous amount of fluctuation. But we did notice inflated prices on weekends, so try to visit midweek if you want to keep costs down.

Added Tax

Bear in mind when booking your hotel in Hiroshima that you’ll pay 10.67% hotel tax on top of your base rate.

So, let’s say the basic nightly room cost at a cheap hotel is $100.00 for one night, your actual total cost is going to be $116.70.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for includes taxes and fees. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you’ll pay the hotel room cost + the additional 10.67% tax.

Taxes are just something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay.

Our Verdict

Hiker stood looking up at Hickman Bridge in Capitol Reef from below
Kristen looking up at Hickman Bridge from below

Capitol Reef is a fantastic family friendly national park, but unlike Zion or Arches it doesn’t have a major resort town on the doorstep for lodging and restaurants. With that said, we think Torrey does a great job of filling the void, and we think it’s by far the best place you can stay near Capitol Reef.

We’d stay at Rim Rock Inn if we were visiting on a super-low budget, but we have to say Austin’s Chuckwagon Lodge was a great mid-range hotel option for us. Broken Spur Inn has lots of all-round appeal, but overall we think Skyview Hotel and Cougar Ridge are the outstanding Capitol Reef hotels, and we’d happily stay at both.
