Our Experience In Jackson WY

We were lucky enough to spend a few nights at two different hotels in Jackson Wyoming during our October visit to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks.

In truth, we really liked staying in all of the towns surrounding the parks, including Cody, Gardiner and West Yellowstone in addition to Jackson.

With that said, we would love to spend more time in Jackson both in the warmer summer months and then again to ski in winter. On a ski trip, we would spend a few nights in Jackson and a few nights in Teton Village.

Up to now we have stayed at both Alpine Motel and Cowboy Village Resort in Jackson, WY. Alpine Motel was affordable when we needed a cheap night but our cabin at Cowboy Village Resort was excellent. We will definitely try new hotels next time we are in Jackson because there are so many fantastic options!

We have written extensively about Grand Teton and especially Yellowstone on our sister site Where Are Those Morgans. Head over to our Wyoming travel guides page after finding your Jackson hotel for help planning your itinerary.

Why Stay In Jackson?

With so many places you can potentially stay around Grand Teton and Yellowstone, why would you choose a hotel in Jackson WY?

There are several benefits to staying in Jackson:

  • Jackson is the closest built up town to Grand Teton National Park.
  • The town is home to a healthy selection of restaurants and bars.
  • Hotel prices are reasonably competitive because there are so many options.
  • Jackson Hole has its own airport which is inside Grand Teton National Park.
  • Jackson is easy to access from Salt Lake City airport.
  • You can watch the legendary Jackson Hole Rodeo.

Jackson is the closest place on the typical Yellowstone and Grand Teton road trip route to SLC airport, which makes it the ideal town to either start or end your visit to the region.

Is Jackson WY A Good Place To Stay For Visiting Grand Teton National Park?

When we answer questions from our readers planning to visit the area, we always suggest staying in Gardiner, West Yellowstone and Jackson on a trip to Grand Teton and Yellowstone for the most efficiency.

What Are The Best Hotels In Jackson Wyoming?

The term best can be interpreted in several ways and it has a different meaning for everyone.

Does best simply mean the highest rated? The highest quality? What about price and location?

In this guide we strive for inclusivity when we show you our version of the best hotels. Our list is based on the highest guest ratings and our own experiences but crucially we include every budget category so that every type of traveler can find the best hotel available.

Are you curious about the best hotels in Jackson Wyoming based purely on ratings?

Here are the top 3 places to stay in Jackson WY according to thousands of reviews from several popular online sources (correct as of June 2023 but subject to frequent changes):

Booking

Hotels (Expedia)

Google

Tripadvisor

Just remember to take ratings at face value.

Ratings are good to use as a guide but they are subjective and will fluctuate over time. Look for hotels with high scores and a high number of ratings. That is the sign of a quality hotel.

One thing to note is that hotels with the best ratings often translate to hotels with the highest nightly cost. And that is why we do not simply list hotels with the highest ratings in our guides.

Are Hotels In Jackson Wyoming Expensive?

Yes, hotels in Jackson Wyoming are more expensive than the average US travel destination. Cheap hotels in Jackson can be more expensive than mid range or even luxury hotels in other parts of the US, especially in summer, on weekends and during holidays.

Jackson is the most unique of towns around Yellowstone and Grand Teton when considering hotel costs because despite being an exceptionally popular place to stay for Grand Teton, it isn’t just a resort town for the parks.

This is a place people want to visit in its own right, and it is a hugely popular ski resort town in winter. House prices are astronomical in Jackson!

Therefore, it is difficult to compare Jackson to the likes of West Yellowstone and Gardiner in terms of prices. With that said, during the peak visiting months for the parks from May through September, we think Jackson hotels are higher on average for the region.

We recommend visiting Jackson and Grand Teton in shoulder season months like May or October if you want to pick up the cheapest Jackson WY hotel room rates.

Hotel Tax In Jackson, WY

Bear in mind when booking your hotel in Jackson Wyoming that you will pay hotel tax, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).

We have mock booked a room both direct and with Booking.com at each hotel in the list below.

Every hotel has a different way of displaying individual taxes, but on average they work out around 6% TOT, 5% city tax and 3% resort fee tax for a total of 14% tax.

So let’s say the basic nightly room cost at a cheap hotel is $200.00 for one night in Jackson, your total cost is going to be $228.00.

  • When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for includes taxes and fees. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
  • Conversely, if you see text reading something like +$50 for taxes and fees, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 14% fees for bed tax and all other fees associated.

Tax is nothing new to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything. But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay!

Where To Stay In Jackson Wyoming

Jackson is a small place but there are a handful of different areas you can stay. The best and most popular place to stay is anywhere within a few minutes walk of Jackson Town Square.

The square is the beating heart of downtown Jackson and it is where you will find many restaurants, shops and bars. Jackson town square is pedestrian friendly and you can’t miss the four antler arches on each corner.

Many of the low budget cheap hotels in Jackson Wyoming are located to the southwest of town. You would need to drive into town for meals and socializing but it isn’t far.

The final option is to stay in Teton Village instead of Jackson. Located at the base of towering mountains, Teton Village is a more expensive, quieter and more scenic place to stay.

We will feature the best hotels in Jackson WY in this guide, but at the end we will also summarize the top hotels in Teton Village in case you would prefer to stay there.
