Why Book A Hotel In Solvang CA?
Let’s start with the obvious question:
Why would you want to book a hotel in a Danish village on the California coast?
Well, the answer is obvious, isn’t it!
Solvang is a unique and entirely authentic northern European village filled with Danish bakeries, shops, restaurants and activities located just 35 miles from Santa Barbara, CA.
It sounds crazy, but it is true!
Three immigrants from Denmark purchased 10,000 acres of land back in 1911 and founded Solvang.
The tiny city of Solvang also just happens to be positioned idyllically along the legendary Pacific Coast Highway road trip route on California highway 101.
Pacific Coast Highway
Anyone driving the California stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway simply has to make time for a stop in Solvang.
Whether you are driving north to south or south to north, Solvang is one of the most unique and fun stops to make between San Francisco and San Diego.
Even if you don’t end up sleeping in Solvang, be sure to leave a few hours spare so you can explore the Danish town.
But the real question at hand for those driving the PCH is this:
Should You Stay In Santa Barbara or Solvang?
Santa Barbara is the closest major city to Solvang. It is where many choose to spend a night either before or after LA on a Pacific Coast Highway road trip itinerary.
Santa Barbara is a wonderful place to spend a few days, but it is also a very expensive place to stay.
You can read our guide to the 15 best hotels in Santa Barbara to learn more about costs.
Solvang is a much cheaper place to spend a night along the popular California coastal route. However, there isn’t much to do in the town, and of course there isn’t a beach like there is in Santa Barbara.
Here’s what we would suggest:
Stay in Solvang if you are driving the route on a lower budget, if you are driving the route from SF to SD in a hurry (say 5-7 days or so), and if you want to experience something a bit different.
Stay in Santa Barbara if you have a little more cash in your budget, if you want to spend a day on the beach and if you have a little longer on your itinerary.

Weekend Break From LA Or Santa Barbara
Of course it isn’t just drivers on the Pacific Coast Highway who will consider spending a few nights in Solvang.
Thousands of local Californians living in the Santa Barbara and Los Angeles area visit Solvang each year. It is a lovely place for a quiet weekend break or a midweek getaway.
Take away the fun and attractive Danish style buildings, food and ambience for a moment. You still have an affordable place to stay in a serene setting and hotels are highly rated.
Things To Do In Solvang
So what can you do if you spend a night or two in Solvang?
Well, there’s not a great deal of attractions per se, nor are there any major hikes or photo spots. But there are plenty of places to relax, eat, drink, shop and learn around the quaint Danish town.
Here are some of the things you can do:
- Walk around Hans Christian Andersen Park
- Explore the Wildling Museum of Art
- Eat Danish foods and drink delicious locally produced wine
- Walk around the Old Mission Santa Ines 1804
- See the Hans Christian Andersen Museum
- Explore the Elverhoj Museum of History & Art
- Take a photo of the Solvang Windmill
- Take a look around the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum
- Drive down to Nojoqui Falls Park to see an 80 ft tall waterfall
- See a show at Solvang Festival Theater
What Are Hotel Prices Like In Solvang?
Hotel prices in Solvang are pleasantly affordable. At least they are if you book far enough in advance.
When we visited Solvang on our drive down the Pacific Coast at the beginning of October, we expected hotel prices to be much higher due to the uniqueness of Solvang’s Danish buildings and atmosphere.
The lower cost of hotel rooms in Solvang makes the town available for every traveler on any budget. Plus, there are no traditional hotel chain hotels in Solvang.
Instead, hotels in Solvang are mostly boutique inns and small hotels run by locals. This alone helps with a welcoming and cosy feel from the get go.
There are two important things we want to make you aware of before booking the best hotels in Solvang, CA.
1. Bed Tax
One thing you should bear in mind when booking a Solvang hotel is “Bed Tax”, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
Solvang is located in Santa Barbara County, California which levies 12% bed tax on all stays, no matter how you book your hotel room.
So let’s say a room costs $100 for one night in Solvang, your total cost is going to be $112.
When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for “includes taxes and fees“. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
Conversely, if you see text reading something like “+$30 for taxes and fees“, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 12% fee for bed tax and other fees.
This is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay!
2. Seasonality
Most places you visit will have at least one peak season and typically an off season. Hotel prices in almost all cities or popular tourist spots have fluctuating hotel prices.
Solvang is not exempt from a change in price during peak season, but if you book early enough you can get rooms at excellent rates, even in summer.
We have found that hotel prices in Solvang are incredibly consistent throughout the year in almost all cases. Spending a night in February will cost the same as a night in August, when prices are usually inflated.
But that is only if you book in advance. If you book a few weeks before or even a few days before, you can expect to pay higher rates.
What data do we have to back this up?
Well, we almost exclusively use Booking.com to book our own hotels when traveling the world.
So, we hopped on Booking and followed this process (date of price checks is Nov 25, 2022):
- Analyzed each hotel option in Solvang
- Selected the 10 best hotels from previous guest reviews, location and value
- Entered three different future dates (always on a Tuesday for consistency)
- Compiled the prices of the 10 best hotels on each date
Take a look at this infographic showing prices.
Booking Rewards
The first thing we should mention is that we logged onto Booking.com incognito, which means none of our personal Booking rewards member deals were included in the pricing.
So the price you see is what you would get without even having a Booking “genius rewards” status.
If you regularly use Booking for your hotels, you will likely have genius rewards and the prices listed above will be even cheaper for you.
What does the data show us?
The data backs up our comments about Solvang having consistent hotel prices throughout the year. The one major exception is Hotel Corque, which is the most popular hotel in Solvang.
We will discuss Hotel Corque later in the guide (it is hotel number 10 in this list).
Outside of Hotel Corque, almost every hotel shows a nightly room price in February and August 2023 of either equivalent or cheaper than in November 2022.
We purposefully selected the first Tuesday after the date of writing to see what a last minute price would look like during off season in Solvang.
Sometimes it can really pay to be organized and book in advance and Solvang is a place you can save on lodging by getting your dates sorted early.

The heated outdoor pool and hot tub are great for the kids, staff get a very high rating on Booking and the King Frederik provides danish pastries at breakfast.
One of the only downsides tends to be around the odd issue with noise, but that seems to be a common problem in Solvang hotels. At this price point with a pool and hot tub, you really can’t go wrong.

Cleanliness and comfort get top marks at the New Haven Inn. The words ‘quaint’, ‘cozy’ and ‘cute’ are frequently used throughout reviews of this excellent small hotel.
Families, couples and solo travelers all rate New Haven Inn highly, the only downside is you don’t get a pool or hot tub here. But if you’re ok with that, this is among the best places to stay in Solvang.

Vinland Hotel is a solid option on the west side of Solvang near a supermarket. It has slightly disproportionate reviews whereby Booking is high and Google is lower than expected.
However, it has a pool and jacuzzi, pets are allowed and rooms are often praised for size and comfort. Sun loungers around the pool would be ideal in summer.
Overall a good option at a low mid range price point.

7. Wine Valley Inn Solvang
Guest ratings:
- Booking.com – 8.2 / 10
- Google – 4.2 / 5
- Price: Mid Range $$
- Rooms: King rooms, queen rooms, suites sleeping up to 4

- Location: Southwest of downtown Solvang
Wine Valley Inn is a quaint, rustic and attractive looking hotel with an old world charm. It is located just off Mission Drive so you get the best of easy access and quieter nights.
However, the ratings don’t match the striking appearance of this hotel and reviews are mixed. It sounds as though there’s a ton of potential but the smaller details are missing.
With that said, the place looks lovely at night with its Danish architectural facades illuminated by fairly lights. Plus, it is one of the only hotels in Solvang downtown that offers a free hot breakfast.

The hotel has recently been purchased and is undergoing remodeling. There have been no reviews in 2022 or 2023 on either Google or Booking, but keep an eye on this hotel as it was previously rated very well.
July 2023 Update: This hotel will be accepting guests from August 31st 2023 and beyond.

9. Mirabelle Inn Solvang
Guest ratings:
- Booking.com – 8.4 / 10
- Google – 4.5 / 5
- Price: Mid Range – Expensive $$ – $$$
- Rooms: King rooms, queen rooms, executive suite
- Amenities: Free WiFi, free parking, excellent on site restaurant
- Location: Center of Lone Pine
Mirabelle Inn is a charming European style boutique hotel in a fabulous location. The bed and breakfast is located in a quiet neighborhood but just minutes from all of the top attractions and eateries in town.
Interestingly, the reason Mirabelle Inn doesn’t have a higher score on Booking is solely down to a low WiFi score. The old and charming hotel is one of those in which WiFi hasn’t been updated, but if you want an escape from life, this is one of the best hotels in Solvang.
The on site restaurant First & Oak is a recipient of the Michelin Plate award, so you know the food is going to be great. No pool, but lovely rooms and quality throughout make this a top choice.

10. Hotel Corque Solvang
Guest ratings:
- Booking.com – 9.1 / 10
- Google – 4.6 / 5
- Price: Mid Range – Expensive $$ – $$$
- Rooms: King rooms, queen rooms with two beds, plush suites
- Amenities: Free WiFi, free parking, outdoor pool and hot tub, on site restaurant
- Location: South side of Solvang
Hotel Corque is something of a mystery to us. It is rated as one of the very best hotels in Solvang California as per Booking and Google reviewers and it looks amazing, but the prices here are all over the place.
This hotel has the most ratings, the best scores and rave reviews about cleanliness. It also has a pool and hot tub, which makes it perfect for families or couples looking for a romantic getaway to Solvang.
We checked the calendar view to see prices every day for the next year. They range from as little as $146 per night up to as much as $1,683 per night. In between, the prices fluctuate, increase and drop more times than we could count.
One thing is for sure, prices here inflate heavily on weekends and during school holidays. But you can snag a room here for under $150 per night if you can be flexible with your dates.
If you can get it cheap, book a night or two at Hotel Corque!
