Our Experience In Deadwood
We visited the historic gold rush town of Deadwood as part of our second South Dakota road trip in the spring of 2022.
The first time we were in the Black Hills back in the fall of 2019, we stayed mostly in the southern areas around Mount Rushmore and Custer, so we missed Deadwood and the other Wild West towns.
But in 2022 we were driving the amazing Mt Rushmore to Yellowstone road trip route and we wouldn’t miss Deadwood for a second time. We also stopped in at nearby Lead and Spearfish on the way over to Devils Tower National Monument.
The gold rush and Wild West themes we knew about, but we didn’t realize Deadwood has become a hot spot for casinos and groups of friends partying. We enjoyed the lively buzz and of course the authentic western architecture that remains in Deadwood today.

Why Stay In Deadwood?
Deadwood is one of the most popular places to visit near Mount Rushmore. It is perfect for families, couples who want to get a taste for what the Wild West once looked like.
You will find traditional saloon style bars and restaurants, coffee shops and bars. But there are also fun museums and mine tours for history buffs.
Groups of friends drinking in bars create a fun and energetic vibe in the small historic center of Deadwood. The casinos attract thousands of visitors each year who want a calmer and less overwhelming experience playing the tables when compared to the likes of Las Vegas.
Finally, we think Deadwood is in a great location within the northern reaches of the Black Hills. You could spend a few days down in Keystone or Custer before spending a night or two up in Deadwood.

Things To Do In Deadwood

What Are The Best Hotels In Deadwood SD?
The term best can be interpreted in several ways and it has a different meaning for everyone.
Does best simply mean the highest rated? The highest quality? What about price and location?
In this guide we strive for inclusivity when we show you our version of the best hotels. Our list is based on the highest guest ratings and our own experiences but crucially we include every budget category so that every type of traveler can find the best hotel available.
Are you curious about the best hotels in Deadwood SD based purely on ratings?
Here are the top 3 hotels in Deadwood according to thousands of reviews from several popular online sources (with at least 100 authentic guest reviews – correct as of September 2023 but subject to frequent changes):
Booking
Hotels (Expedia)
- 1. 1899 Inn
- 2. Cedar Wood Inn
- 3. Martin and Mason Hotel
Tripadvisor
As you can see, there is a healthy variation of different hotels ranking at the top of each resource according to previous guests. However, the standout hotel in Deadwood is 1899 Inn which tops three of the four sources.
Ratings are good to use as a guide but they are subjective and will fluctuate over time. Look for hotels with high scores and a high number of ratings. That is the sign of a quality hotel.
One thing to note is that hotels with the best ratings often translate to hotels with the highest nightly cost. And that is why we do not simply list hotels with the highest ratings in our guides.
