Our Stowe VT Hotels Experience
Stowe was one of the highlights on our first New England fall road trip and we are excited to return for a second visit in the fall of 2023.
We knew the small mountain town was a year round destination thanks to hiking, waterfalls, photography opportunities and skiing, but we didn’t expect Stowe to be so quaint and attractive.
After spending a fun day with our cameras around the mountain resort, mountain road and downtown Stowe, we spent a night at one of the Austrian Alps style lodges in the countryside.
Next time we are in Stowe we plan to spend one night in town and one night at the mountain resort.
Why Stay In Stowe VT?
Stowe is a four season tourist destination in northern Vermont for lovers of the great outdoors.
You can hike and enjoy photography in the spring, summer and fall, or you can ski at the premier resort in Vermont in winter.
Stowe is the perfect place to stay for a night when road tripping through Vermont or New England, especially in fall when the foliage transitions into a stunning light show of deep earthy colors.
Along with other popular towns such as Burlington, Woodstock and Manchester, Stowe is one of the very best places to visit in Vermont.
Each brings its own characteristics to the table, but Stowe offers the most diverse destination and will suit more travel styles.
Mountains, rolling hills and forested valleys are filled with Alpine style hotels, restaurants and breweries.
Whether exploring by foot, bicycle, car or skis, Stowe is the perfect place to soak up the sheer beauty of Vermont and New England.

Are Hotels In Stowe VT Expensive?
Stowe is a popular resort in the heart of New England, which means you can expect to pay above the average nightly price for a hotel.
With that said, prices aren’t as high as you might imagine, especially when compared to hotels in similar popular towns in the region like Woodstock VT and Lake Placid NY.
Travelers on a lower budget can find Stowe VT hotels for around $150 per night in off season and around $200 each night in peak season.
Those with healthier travel budgets who prefer to stay at luxury hotels can expect to pay around $250 per night in off season and $300 each night in peak season.
Note: The average expected costs listed above have been acquired months in advance and they are for weekday stays. You can expect to pay more if you leave your booking until last minute, stay on a weekend or plan to visit to ski in the winter, which we heard some refer to as the “Stowe effect”.
Hotel Tax In Stowe, Vermont
Bear in mind when booking your hotel in Stowe Vermont that you will pay hotel tax, which is officially known as Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
We have mock booked a room both direct and with Booking.com at each hotel in the list below. Every hotel has at least 10% tax added to the cost.
So let’s say a room costs $150 for one night in Stowe VT, your total cost is going to be $165.00
- When booking your hotel using Booking.com look under the price for includes taxes and fees. This means the price you see is final and will not be subject to further add ons.
- Conversely, if you see text reading something like +$30 for taxes and fees, that means you will pay the hotel room cost + the additional 10% fee for bed tax.
Hotels in Stowe may also add other taxes such as a resort fee or meals and rooms tax. Now, resort fees are common but meals and room tax is a new one on us.
Tax is nothing new to Americans who are used to paying tax on pretty much everything.
But for international visitors this is something to be aware of so you avoid any nasty surprises when you come to pay!
Where To Stay In Stowe VT
The set up of Stowe’s tourist infrastructure is interesting for such a small mountain town.
Hotels and restaurants aren’t all centered around one specific attraction or main street, but rather they are spread out between Mt Mansfield and the town of Stowe.
There are three distinct places to stay in Stowe VT:
- 1. The town of Stowe
- 2. Stowe Mountain Road
- 3. Stowe Mountain Resort
Stowe Mountain Resort is located at the base of Mt Mansfield and Stowe town is located a little over 7 miles to the southeast. Most hotels in Stowe VT are found along the connecting mountain road or in town.
All three offer respective pros and cons, such as closeness to amenities, hiking trails and ski runs. The best places to stay in Stowe will depend on your goals and itinerary.
We personally chose to stay around half way up Stowe Mountain Road during our first visit so that we had easy access to all attractions. Next time we will stay closer to the town, which is where the majority of restaurants are located.
